Art in Legion Park showcases Arlington art, music, brew talents

The city of Arlington has an outstanding public art collection thanks in great part to the efforts of the Arlington Arts Council, a nonprofit citizen group that, well, likes art.
Along with with its mission to help purchase sculpture and other art for the city, the council puts on two concerts a year, offers the Rock Paper Scissors Art Show in February and hosts the Art in Legion Park downtown in the late summer — this year on Saturday and Sunday.
The event includes art of many kinds, live music, and a beer and wine garden.
“It’s really a showcase of our local talent,” said Sarah Arney, a longtime member of the arts council. “Most of the 30 artists exhibiting are council members or local residents. The music is all local, and our local Skookum beer will be served on Saturday.
“It’s an intimate art show and parking is so easy.”
The stage features music by Johnny Green, The Pack String Band and Marcia Kester on Saturday. On Sunday, hear David Lee Howard and RhondoSwing.
Art projects for children will be available and art collectors can expect raffle prizes of even more art.
Arney suggests that people make sure to stop by Judith Echegaray’s booth to look at her “fantastic papier mache creatures that are like the carved wood animals in Oaxaca.”
Also see paintings and pastels by Monica Bretherton, Kathy Critchfield, Jacques Drapeau, Vicki Johnson, Bill Koger, Yvonne Thomle and Kristina Yantis; jewelry by Donna Aney, Kathy Tao-Alexanderson, Stephen Winchester, Caitlin Nash, Lee Beitz and Allison Gamage; photography by Berta Baker, Arney and David Lunde; and wood, textiles, gourds, wire and other sculptural work by Kathy and Bob Allison, Erika Bruss, Margaret DeMars, Stuart Fountain, Karen Lyons, Candis Morthm, Mike Nordine, Ally Pries, Kirk Ratajesak, Joe Wilson, Karen Young, and Tony and Sarah Hedlund.
