PORTLAND, Ore. — It took a little extra effort, but the Everett Silvertips are returning home with back-to-back road victories.
Matt Fonteyne and Patrick Bajkov found the net in a shootout as Everett defeated the host Portland Winterhawks 4-3 Sunday in a Western Hockey League game played before 4,266 fans at Veteran’s Coliseum.
Fonteyne’s wrister ended the shootout in walk-off fashion. He was Everett’s fourth shooter after Bajkov and Portland’s Kieffer Bellows scored in the initial three-round shootout.
The Tips (27-16-1-1, 56 points) have won four straight and play host to Tri-City at 4:05 p.m. today at Angel of the Winds Arena.
Everett is tied in points for the U.S. Division lead with Portland (26-13-1-2, 56 points) though the Winterhawks have two games in hand.
Fonteyne added a goal and an assist in regulation. Bajkov added two assists.
The Tips took a 2-1 lead into the final period, but Portland battled back twice to tie the game in the final frame.
Bellows tied it 2-2 with a wrister from the right circle at 1:18, but six minutes later Connor Dewar put the Tips back in front when he redirected a power-play shot past Kehler.
Then Skyler McKenzie’s second goal of the game came at 15:26.
The Tips killed a four-minute double minor penalty in the final moments to force the extra session.
Overtime solved nothing and forced the shootout.
Everett trailed 1-0 through one period, but turned the game around in just 1:16. Fonteyne’s power-play goal between the circles at 13:33 tied the contest 1-1.
Then Martin Fasko-Rudas potted a rebound of a Bryce Kindopp shot at 14:49 to give Everett a 2-1 lead.
That’s how it remained at the second intermission.
The Winterhawks took the initial lead during their first power play in the first period. McKenzie tapped in a loose puck for Portland’s first goal at 13:48, with Cody Glass and Joachim Blichfeld earning assists.
McKenzie had two goals and Bellows had a goal and an assist for Portland.
Everett finished 2-for-6 on the power play. Portland was 1-for-5.
