Free park-ing: The next day to visit national parks without an entrance fee is April 14, designated as Spring Day. Other free days are April 22 (Earth Day), June 2 (National Trails Day), June 9 (National Get Outdoors Day), June 10 (Fishing Day), Aug. 25 (the National Park Service’s 102nd birthday), Sept. 22 (National Public Lands Day), Nov. 11 (Veterans Day), and Nov. 23 (Autumn day). Historic tour: The second annual Camano Island Historic Sites Tour is April 6-8. Learn about the first settlers of Camano Island and the history of Camano Island State Park. The free self-guided tour includes interactive exhibits, history talks, a big band dance, spelling bee and pancake breakfast. New this year, free charter bus tours also available. Day hike: Explore nature around the Middle Fork Snoqualmie River with a 6-mile day hike April 5. The group, led by Danielle Graham from the Seattle Naturalists Committee, will look at what plants are starting to appear and examine mosses and lichens. The hike will be at a slow to moderate pace with frequent pauses. Availability is limited. Registration closes April 5. More at www.mountaineers.org.
Hiking trip: Visit the lower, middle and upper parts of Wallace Falls with the Seattle Hiking Committee April 7. The moderate, 5.5-mile day hike will go at a leisurely pace with opportunities to take pictures of the scenic surroundings. Registration closes April 5. Just seven spots are left. Earth Day: Help plan trees to restore the middle fork of Quilceda Creek and improve the fish habitat from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 21 at Strawberry Fields Park, 6100 152nd St. NE, Marysville. Staff from the Adopt A Steam Foundation and the city of Marysville will coordinate the volunteer work. It’s open to all ages, rain or shine. Wear sturdy boots and work clothes. Wildlife habitat: Discuss how to humanely co-exist with neighborhood wildlife at 7 p.m. April 5 at Rosehill Community Center, 304 Lincoln Avenue, Mukilteo. Ashley Walsh, a wildlife admission specialist at PAWS, the Lynnwood-based animal shelter, will discuss how to deal with interactions between wildlife and humans in a humane way. Sustainable fisheries: Nicole Baker, a research scientist at the University of Washington’s School of Aquatic and Fisheries Science, will discuss sustainable fisheries and how to identify fish caught in them in the grocery store at a free talk 2 p.m. April 7 at the Everett Public Library Auditorium, 2702 Hoyt Avenue, Everett. The Mountaineers Gala: 6 to 10 p.m. April 14, Fremont Studios, 155 N. 35th St., Seattle. Dinner, reception, auctions benefiting Mountaineer programs. Special guest is Lynn Hill, a living legend in the national climbing community, who completed a free ascent of The Nose in Yosemite — a feat that has been repeated only once in 19 years.
