The Rotary Club of Everett on June 7 took 10 teenagers on a shopping spree to buy what the teens needed to take the next step in their education. The College Essentials program each year helps graduating seniors in the Everett School District’s AVID program (Advancement Via Individual Determination) get ready for college. Many of the program’s students come from families with limited incomes and may be the first in their families to go to college.

The $500 awards helped the teens purchase laptops, notepads, hot plates and more. The Mill Creek Fred Meyer, at 12906 Bothell-Everett Highway, also offered special discounts to help the students take the money farther.

Students who received the scholarship awards: Salima Rugabando, Collin Murray and Seilah Quevedo, from Everett High School; Eli Brusseau, Caireanna Mills, Katia Foss and Jacky Talavera, Sequoia High School; and Alishat Yusuff, Fanta Gibba and Hellene Tulu, Cascade High School.

The $5,000 worth of College Essentials awards were among $202,200 in scholarships awarded this year by the Rotary Club of Everett, a service group of business persons and professionals. Learn more at www.everettrotary.com.
