AquaSox top Canadians 4-3 for third straight victory

EVERETT — Jansiel Rivera hit a solo home run and threw out a runner at the plate as the Everett AquaSox topped the visiting Vancouver Canadians 4-3 before 4,549 fans Wednesday at Everett Memorial Stadium.
The win was the third straight for the North Division-leading AquaSox (12-8). Vancouver fell to 8-12 and has lost all four games to Everett this season.
Cody Mobley (1-0) earned the win as he allowed two run and struck out six in 4 2/3 innings of relief. Michael Plassmeyer tot the start and struck out four in two innings of work. Everett reliever Noah Zavolas worked the final 2 1/3 for his second save.
The Frogs broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Bobby Honeyman led off with a walk and Connor Kopach followed with a bunt single. Matt Sanders doubled in Honeyman, and Kopach scored on a wild pitch. Sanders came home on a squeeze bunt by Geoandry Montilla as Everett took a 4-1 lead into the seventh inning.
Tanner Kirwer greeted Zavolas with a two-run home run in the seventh as Vancouver cut the deficit to 4-3.
That was as close as the Canadians got.
Everett took an initial 1-0 lead when Rivera led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run to straight-away center field. Rivera’s four home runs lead the AquaSox.
The Canadians drew even in the top of the third. Brandon Polizzi reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Vincent Capra to make it 1-1.
Vancouver appeared poised to take the lead in the top of the fourth, but Rivera threw out Jake Brodt trying to score from second to end the fourth and preserve the tie. Mobley also stranded the tying run at third base in the top of the fifth.
Kopach and Montilla each had two hits for Everett.
Kirwer had three hits and finished a triple short of the cycle, but also struck out to end the game with the tying run at second base.
The teams return Thursday at 7:05 p.m. for the second contest of the three-game series.
