Be charitable like the honey bee at Mill Creek fundraiser

1. Buzz kill.
Everyone knows the feeling of being stung by a bee, wasp or yellow jacket — unless you’ve lived a blessed life.
They can strike at picnics, camping trips or during a game of frisbee. Here are a few ways to avoid getting stung.
Cover food at picnics or outdoor meals at home. Shy away from heavily scented soaps, perfumes and bright-colored clothing, which can attract the stinging insects. Stay calm if one or more are around. Swatting may lead to stings.
If stung, cleanse the area with soap and water and/or apply a cold pack for relief. Wasps don’t lose their stingers. Bees do. Remove the stinger with tweezers or by scraping it with a credit card.
For allergic reactions, call 911 or use an anaphylaxis kit. More at www.doh.wa.gov.
2. Bug curious.
When they’re not on the attack, bees are fascinating creatures.
So are many other insects — even the creepy and crawly kinds.
“Bug Lab for Kids” by John W. Guyton will have children cozying up with spiders, centipedes, butterflies and, yes, even bees.
The 144-page book features illustrations, interesting facts and fun activities, including experiments, hunt-and-catch and citizen science assignments. Also find tips on how to identify bugs that shouldn’t be touched.

3. Be charitable.
Bid for a weekend trip to Neah Bay, a timeshare in Mazatlan or event tickets for a good cause.
A Night of Hope at the Creek, a fundraising event for Hope Creek Charitable Foundation, is 6:30 p.m. Aug. 21 at Gold Creek Community Church, 4326 148th St. SE, Mill Creek. There will be live music, wine, appetizers and a silent auction.
Proceeds will benefit a variety of outreach programs, including Backpacks of Hope, Day of Hope and the Mill Creek Community Food Bank.
Tickets are $40 each or $75 per couple.
