Navy base exercise this week
Naval Station Everett plans a security exercise Wednesday. Training is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Base access will be restricted for short periods of time. Expect a greater security presence and small boat maneuvers around the harbor, as well as loudspeaker announcements, active emergency response vehicles and flashing lights.

Smelter cleanup begins Aug. 28
The work will affect traffic around the interchange at Highway 529 and E. Marine View Drive.
The Department of Ecology will be starting with phase two of the cleanup first.
For both phases, the off-ramp from northbound Highway 529 onto E. Marine View will be closed.

Back-to-school in Lake Stevens
The Lake Stevens Community Resource Center offers low-income families free backpacks and school supplies at a back-to-school event set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Lake Stevens Community Center, 1808 Main St. Families should bring documentation of their child’s enrollment in the Lake Stevens School District and their ProviderOne card. Children must be present.

Lost a loved one to suicide?
A Survivors of Suicide Loss support group meets 6 to 8 p.m. on fourth Thursdays at the Stanwood Library, 9701 271st St. NW. The group is hosted by the SC Community Action for those who have lost someone from suicide.

WAYS TO HELP
Clean up an urban forest
Green Everett holds work parties to keep urban forests lush. The next work party is set for 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Thornton A Sullivan Park at Silver Lake. Gloves, tools and light snacks are provided. Help water-hungry young plants survive the hot summer and remove invasive species. Meet new friends, too.
RSVP requested.
Other work parties are planned for Sept. 15 at Hannabrook Park and Sept. 22 at Rotary Park.

Arlington blood drives
Bloodworks Northwest holds a mobile blood drive 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 31 in the parking lot at Arlington City Hall, 238 N Olympic Ave. The drive is being organized by Katie Phillips as a scholarship fundraiser.
