New building for Edmonds students
After many setbacks, a groundbreaking ceremony will be held Wednesday for the Science Engineering and Technology Building at Edmonds Community College.
The event is scheduled between 3:30 and 5 p.m., in the school’s parking lot B, at 20000 68th Ave. W, Lynnwood.
The 70,000-square-foot building is expected to open in 2020. According to the original plans, it should have opened seven years ago. Because of the recession, budgets and permitting processes, the project stalled.
EVENTS
9/11 memorial ceremonies
Local communities plan memorial ceremonies to remember those lost in the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
Edmonds: 9:11 a.m. Sept. 11 at the Fallen Firefighter Memorial Park at Edmonds Fire Station 17, 275 Sixth Ave. N
The backdrop for the ceremony is the park’s 1-ton beam recovered from the collapsed World Trade Center. Firefighters also will add a plaque to the memorial for Walter “Duffy” Burns, a South County Fire firefighter and paramedic who died June 11.
Lake Stevens: 10 a.m. Sept. 11 at Lake Stevens Fire Station 81, 12409 21st St. NE
Students will help with this ceremony with presentations and singing. There also will be speakers, tolling of the bells and a playing of taps.
Marysville: 8:30 a.m. Sept. 11 at the Police and Firefighters Memorial outside the Marysville Library, 6120 Grove St.
Firefighters and police officers hold this annual ceremony to remember first responders who died in the attacks, as well as Marysville fire Lt. Jeff Thornton, who died of cancer that same day.
