1. Support your neighbors.

The holidays bring joy to many, but hardship to others.

You can help by donating to the Marysville Community Food Bank and Toy Store’s holiday drive. Donate canned food, new toys and books, stocking stuffers, gift cards, coats and wrapping materials. Drop off items at 4150 88th St. NE between 8 a.m. to noon Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The food bank and toy store also is looking for volunteers. Those interested in working at the food bank should contact marysvillefoodbank@frontier.com; for the toy store email fbtoystore@gmail.com or call 360-363-8507.

The Marysville Community Food Bank and Toy Store serves more than 1,300 children per year in Snohomish County.

2. Thanks, veterans.

The YMCA of Snohomish County is giving back on Veterans Day.

Active and retired members and their families can visit one of YMCA of Snohomish County’s five branches for free on Nov. 11.

Swim in the pool, work out in the gym, or try other recreational activities at locations in Everett, Mill Creek, Mukilteo, Monroe, Marysville and Stanwood.

3. Citizens’ badge.

If you watch the TV show “Law & Order” for the cop scenes, the Lynnwood Police Department’s Citizens Academy might be for you.

Applications are currently being accepted for the 14-week course, which runs January through April. The free and interactive class will teach citizens the basics of being a police officer, including patrol tactics, mock crime-scene investigations and DUI procedures.

Classes will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. every Thursday from Jan. 10 through April 11 at the Lynnwood Senior Center, 19000 44th Ave. W.
