MARYSVILLE — It took a while, but the city has purchased the last house on First Street, paving the way for the First Street Bypass.

The tenants have until April 1 to move out. All of the other homes have been demolished on that block.

The city is still negotiating buying parts of property east of there, but no other homeowners will need to be relocated, Chief Administrative Officer Gloria Hirashima said.

The bypass is being built to make way for the Highway 529 interchange off I-5. When that is completed in a few years, motorists will be able to enter and leave town without having to deal with the railroad tracks, which have caused traffic woes for decades.

The City Council approved the final land buy at 1304 First St. on Monday in a special meeting.
