Yuk it up
Students in kindergarten through 6th grade can enter the Washington Poison Center’s 2019 poison prevention poster contest to show how Mr. Yuk helps keep people safe from toxic substances. The theme is “Mr. Yuk to the Rescue!” Deadline is Jan. 31.
The winner receives a school visit from Mr. Yuk to present the Mr. Yuk Award of Excellence and a trip to Olympia to deliver posters to legislators during National Poison Prevention Week in March. The winner and three guests get to ride with Mr. Yuk in his one-of-a-kind Yuk-mobile.

Learn about local birds
John Marzluff is scheduled to speak at the next Snohomish Garden Club meeting, at 7 p.m. Monday. Marzluff is a professor of wildlife science at the University of Washington whose research has focused on social behaviors of crows, ravens and jays. He also specializes in how urbanization is affecting songbirds in the Seattle area.
The Snohomish Garden Club gathers on the second Monday of each month at the Snohomish Senior Center, 506 Fourth St. Meetings are open to the public.

Job fair in Bothell area
The Northshore Fire Department in Kenmore plans to host a free career fair from noon to 4 p.m. Jan. 30. Local public agencies and nonprofits will be participating.
All ages, experience levels and industries are encouraged to attend. There is free parking. Dress professionally.

Hear about Arlington schools
The Arlington Public Schools State of the District Address is set for 6:30 p.m. Jan. 24 at Post Middle School. A tour of the campus will start at 6 p.m. Superintendent Chrys Sweeting will speak, and information about the upcoming bond will be shared. Student groups will provide music and desserts.

The city of Everett plans a free upcoming Community Emergency Response Team training in Spanish. Learn how to be prepared for a disaster and how to help friends and neighbors manage as well. The class runs on Thursday nights for eight weeks starting Feb. 7. Priority for registration is given to city residents and those who work in city limits.

Watch ‘Selma’ movie
Civil rights will be the topic of a special event at the Marysville Opera House. The movie “Selma” will be shown. It’s about the 1965 voting rights marches. Discussion is to follow.
