Everett book discussion

The Southside Book Club will be discussing “Girl in Disguise” by Greer Macallister at its June 11 meeting. The event is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 2702 Hoyt Avenue, Everett. The book is set during the Civil War on the streets of Chicago. It’s about the first female Pinkerton detective, Kate Warne, a widow with a knack for manipulation.

Party in the park

Mill Creek is bringing back its Party in the Park events this summer for three nights of outdoor fun.

  • 5 to 7 p.m. June 27, Highlands Park, 16123 Highlands Blvd. SE
  • 5 to 7 p.m. July 25, Mill Creek Sports Park, 13903 N. Creek Drive
  • 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 22, Heron Park, 2701 155th St. SE

The events are designed to connect neighbors, city staff and first responders. Food will be available to purchase.

The Sky Valley Food Bank will be open Monday and Friday mornings from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and Wednesday afternoons from 4 to 7 p.m.

WAYS TO HELP

Donate cellphones

Domestic Violence Services of Snohomish County takes donations of cellphones with chargers. Even without service, cellphones can be used to access 911 emergency services. The nonprofit gives them to clients who need the phones for safety reasons. Drop off donations at the New and Again Thrift Shoppe, 3010 Grand Ave. in Everett, or at other sites in Everett, Brier, Mountlake Terrace and Stanwood that are listed at dvs-snoco.org.

Assist cancer patients

The Cancer Resource Center at the Providence Regional Cancer Partnership seeks volunteers to work weekly four-hour shifts meeting with cancer patients and caregivers to provide support. Drivers also are needed to get cancer patients to treatments and appointments. Volunteers use their own vehicles.

Help injured wildlife

PAWS Wildlife Center in Lynnwood seeks volunteers. Help with wildlife care, keep the nature trail maintained, or hand-feed baby songbirds next spring, among many other tasks. An application, orientation and time commitments are required. Get started at www.paws.org/volunteer.

Donate eyeglasses, hearing aids

Lions Clubs collect used eyeglasses and hearing aids. Donations may be made at Everett Public Library branches, the PUD main office and at most opticians and eye doctors.
