Ice cream in the blink of an eye — all thanks to science

1. Chilly treat.

Scientists can make ice cream in five minutes.

Liquid nitrogen rapidly freezes the creamy ingredients with no cranking and no ice-and-rock salt mixtures.

“Instant ice cream” will be among the research projects presented by Everett Community College science and engineering students from 1 to 4 p.m. June 11 at Henry M. Jackson Conference Center, 2000 Tower St., Everett. Free.

In addition to liquid nitrogen ice cream, students will explain how they made science-y stuff like slime, a water bottle rocket and a 20-gallon tank of “Oobleck” (a goo inspired by a Dr. Seuss book).

Vote for their favorite project; the top five vote-getters win prizes.

2. Berry treat.

Maybe you don’t want a brain freeze. Try some shortcake instead.

Stuff your face with it, even.

Marysville Strawberry Festival, which kicked off its 88th year Saturday, will have a strawberry shortcake-eating contest at 1 p.m. June 15 at Asbery Field, on Fourth Street and Alder Avenue. For ages 5 and up. Registration is $3 for kids and $5 for adults.

The festival, which continues through June 16, includes carnival rides, a talent show, market and a parade.

Sign-up for the shortcake-eating contest at www.maryfest.org/shortcake.

3. Vegan treat.

If you don’t eat gelatin, dairy or gluten, we’ve got you covered.

Pick up a bag of vegan marshmallows at stores like Trader Joe’s in Everett or Lynnwood and Whole Foods in Lynnwood. These ‘mallows will give you that plant-based sugar fix you’ve been craving.

Think of them as a healthful-ish surprise for the campfire this summer.
