Author to speak about Monte Cristo
The public is invited to attend the Lake Stevens Historical Society’s general meeting at 6 p.m. today to hear local author J.D. Howard discuss his latest book, “The Pride of Monte Cristo.” The book explores life in the remote mining camp of Monte Cristo in 1896. Books will be available for purchase and signing following the program.
Refreshments will be served. The meeting will be at Lake Stevens School District headquarters, 12309 22nd St. NE, Lake Stevens.
Blood drive fundraiser
The Cascade High School girls wrestling team is hosting a blood drive fundraiser July 19 at the high school, 801 E. Casino Road. Ages 16 and up can donate. Parent permission is required for minors.

Sheriff’s precinct open house
Ever want to see the inner workings of Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office? Now’s your chance. The south precinct in Mill Creek is hosting an open house Saturday afternoon that’s free and open to the public. You can meet the deputies who patrol your neighborhoods, take a tour of the facility, gawk at the SWAT vehicles, and learn about opportunities with the Neighborhood Watch. There’ll be free hot dogs and chips.
The event takes place from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the south precinct, 15928 Mill Creek Blvd., Mill Creek.

Tuck Everlasting
Get tickets now for a live performance of “Tuck Everlasting,” at various times on weekends from June 28 to July 20 at the PUD Auditorium, 2320 California St., Everett. Tickets are $12 to $16.
The play is about an 11-year-old girl named Winnie Foster, who meets a family with the secret to never-ending life. It’s put on by LuDus Performing Arts, a Lake Stevens-based nonprofit that helps young people explore theatre arts.

HEADS UP
Wading pool opens today
The Forest Park Swim Center wading pool opens today. Kids 7 and younger can use the pool noon to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. It will be open until Aug. 31. In the park’s main space, a water playground with 16 interactive fountains and designated tot spray pad is available 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily through Sept. 22.
Schack seeking volunteers
The Schack Art Center is looking for help with upcoming events, including the annual Fresh Paint art festival Aug. 17 and 18 at the Port of Everett Marina. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
Information sessions on volunteering will be held 5 to 5:30 p.m. July 24 and from 10:30 to 11 am. July 27.
