Building Communities of Hope Gala
Compass Health will host its third annual Building Communities of Hope gala at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Tulalip Resort Casino, 10200 Quil Ceda Blvd. This year’s event will feature mental health advocate and comedian Bill Bernat as the keynote speaker. All proceeds will support Compass Health’s specialized camp programs, Camp Outside the Box and Camp Mariposa, for children who have behavioral health and substance abuse challenges. Cost is $100 per person, or $1,000 per table.

South county candidates forum
Get to know candidates for the Lynnwood City Council and the Edmonds School Board at an event scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Edmonds Community College Black Box Theatre. The venue is located at the college’s Mukilteo Hall, 20310 68th Ave. W., Lynnwood.
Sponsors included EdCC, the League of Women Voters, the American Association of University Women SnoKing Branch, Sno-Isle Libraries and the NAACP.

Let’s taco ’bout a cure
A taco feast will benefit childhood cancer research at Seattle Children’s Hospital and through its Strong Against Cancer initiative. The fundraising dinner is scheduled for 5-10 p.m. Saturday at Wintergreen Tree Farm, 13606 S. Machias Road, Snohomish. Tickets are $75 per person.
Celebrate public lands
Join the U.S. Forest Service on Saturday to clean up parts of the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest on Public Lands Day. Volunteer to do trail restoration, build picnic tables, remove invasive plant species and learn about opportunities to help the forest, starting at 9 a.m. at the Middle Fork Campground in King County.

Those not looking to work can stop by from 1 to 3:30 p.m. for information about upcoming events, wildlife, employment and more. Kids can visit with Smokey Bear, Sammy the Sounder and Woodsy Owl.
Holiday card design contest
The Lynnwood Convention Center is seeking creative middle and high school students to help design the artwork for its 2019 holiday greeting card. The contest is open to all private or public middle and high school students enrolled in a school located in the Edmonds School District.
The winner gets $150 and 25 greeting cards. Deadline is Nov. 4.

Help injured wildlife
PAWS Wildlife Center in Lynnwood seeks volunteers for a variety of roles. Help with wildlife care, keep the nature trail maintained, or hand-feed baby songbirds next spring, among many other tasks.
