Community sports roundup: Everett man reaches Mid-Am quarters

Jake Koppenberg showed he’s one of the eight best men’s amateur golfers over the age of 25 in the United States.

The Everett High School graduate was one of the standouts at the U.S. Mid-Amateur held Sept. 14-19 at Colorado Gold Club in Parker, Colorado.

Koppenberg, who qualified for the tournament by sharing medalist honors in sectional qualifying in August, shot a two-round score of 3-over par 145 to tie for 33th in stroke play, making him one of 64 golfers to advance to match play.

Seeded 43rd in match play, Koppenberg defeated 22nd-seeded Scott Strickland of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, 4 and 2 in the first round; defeated 11th-seeded Jack Dukeminier of Beaverton, Oregon, 1 up in the second round; then topped 59th-seeded Daniel DeBra of Lutz, Florida, in 19 holes in the round of 16.

In the quarterfinals Koppenberg came up against Australia’s Lukas Michel, the 46th seed. Koppenberg found himself 4 down after just five holes and was still 4 down after 13. However, a furious late rally saw Koppenberg win four of the final five holes to force extra holes. Michel won on the second extra hole, then went on to claim the tournament title.

Lake Stevens’ Allen wins cross country award

Lake Stevens High School graduate Trevor Allen, now a junior on the Central Washington University men’s cross country team, was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s Cross County Athlete of the Week for Sept. 30-Oct. 6. Allen posted the best non-Division I or open competitor time at the John Payne/Curtis Invitational, held Saturday in University Place, covering the 8-kilometer course in a time of 25 minutes, 39.6 seconds to place 12th.

GP’s Miller honored for WWU soccer exploits

Glacier Peak High School graduate Camron Miller, now a junior defender on the Western Washington University men’s soccer team, was named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 23-29. Miller scored goals in both Western’s 2-1 overtime loss to Azusa Pacific on Sept. 26 and 2-1 victory over Point Loma on Sept. 28. Miller has helped the Vikings start off the season 1-0-1 in conference and 4-3-1 overall.

Snohomish grad Reynolds wins academic award

Snohomish High School graduate Sami Reynolds, now a sophomore outfielder on the University of Washington softball team, was named an NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete last Wednesday. To be eligible for the award athletes must maintain a grade-point average of 3.5 or better over the full academic year. Reynolds was a third-team NFCA All-Region selection last season and also was named the the All-Women’s College World Series team.
