Community sports roundup: EvCC men top 1st NWAC coaches’ poll

The Everett Community College Trojans are considered the early team to beat in the Northwest Athletic Conference.

The NWAC released its first men’s basketball coaches poll of the season last Wednesday, and Everett was the team that found itself at the top. The Trojans, winners of the North Division the past two season, received five of the eight first-place votes to edge out Clackamas.

Everett started the season 9-2.

Harper, Gunterman earn All-America honors

A pair of Wesco alums who are members of the Western Washington University volleyball team were named NCAA Division II All-Americans.

Oak Harbor High School graduate Kayleigh Harper, a senior middle blocker, was the first consensus first-team All-American in program history, earning first-team recognition from both the American Volleyball Coaches Association and the Division II Conference Commissioners Association.

Lake Stevens High School graduate Gabby Gunterman, a sophomore outside hitter, earned third-team AVCA All-American recognition.

Locals help WWU women’s soccer to 2nd place

Three players from local high schools contributed to the Western Washington University women’s soccer team finishing as NCAA Division II national runners up over the weekend.

Western beat Flager College 2-0 in the semifinals on Friday and lost to Grand Valley State 1-0 in double overtime in the championship game Saturday. Arlington High School graduate Liv Larson, a senior forward, started both games and played 132 minutes between the two games, registering two shots. Granite Falls High School grad Dayana Diaz, a sophomore forward, came off the bench in both games and played 119 minutes, registering five shots, three of which were on target. Archbishop Murphy High School grad Talia Daigle, a junior forward, also appeared in both games, totalling 23 minutes.

Fatkin leaves Montana women’s basketball

Glacier Peak High School graduate Sammy Fatkin has left the University of Montana women’s basketball team, the school announced last week. The junior guard, who transferred to Montana from Arizona following her freshman season and was granted a waiver by the NCAA to play without sitting out a year, averaged 5.5 points and 16.2 minutes per game through the Lady Griz’s first six contests. No reason was provided by the school for Fatkin’s departure.
