EVERETT — A suspect has been arrested in an apparent sneak-attack on a stranger who was using an ATM, a robbery attempt that left the credit union customer with a serious head injury earlier this month in Everett.

On Dec. 11, the man had just entered his PIN number on the BECU ATM at 11127 Evergreen Way, when someone hit him in the back of the head with a hard object, according to a police report filed in Everett District Court.

The suspect, 26, allegedly attempted to withdraw money, but when there was nothing to take from the account, “he walked calmly away,” the report says.

The injured man was transported to Providence Regional Medical Center Everett. Police noted he needed several staples and suffered from a brain bleed.

Five days after the robbery, an Everett officer took photos of the suspect captured by a security camera and visited apartment complexes in the area. One woman initially said she didn’t recognize the man in the photos. But then as the officer walked back to his car, she flagged him down. She found an ID in the parking lot, according to the police report. The officer noted the person in the ID looked like the suspect in the security footage.

Another officer also identified the suspect, saying he arrested the man on Dec. 14, in connection with a shoplifting report at a WinCo. The suspect was wearing the same jacket, and he had a pellet gun in his backpack, the officer reported.

The man was booked into the Snohomish County Jail on Dec. 17, for investigation of first-degree robbery and second-degree assault.

A judge set his bail at $100,000.
