The Mariners and Oakland A’s will make up this week’s planned three-game series in Seattle, which has been postponed due to COVID-19 concerns, with two doubleheaders later in the month.
A day after announcing scheduled games Tuesday and Wednesday at T-Mobile Park would be postponed following a positive test result in the A’s organization over the weekend, Major League Baseball released another statement Tuesday morning, postponing Thursday’s series finale “out of an abundance of caution and to allow for the continued testing of Oakland Athletics’ personnel.”
The three games will be made up with two seven-inning doubleheaders.
The first doubleheader will be Sept. 14 in Seattle, on what was a scheduled off day for the Mariners, and will open their final homestand of the season. The second will be Sept. 26 in Oakland, when the regularly scheduled game for that day will become a doubleheader.
The A’s game against the Astros in Houston was called off Sunday following a positive COVID-19 test result in the club’s traveling party. The club did not specify whether the positive test result was from a player, coach or other team personnel.
Additional rounds of testing Sunday and Monday revealed no additional positives, and though the A’s have reportedly been cleared to resume playing Thursday, the trip to Seattle was called off.
“There have been no other positive tests among A’s personnel following the initial positive test,” MLB’s statement says. “A’s personnel who have not been identified as close contacts have been approved to travel back to Oakland today. Major League Baseball will continue to provide updates as necessary.”
This is the first set of Mariners games impacted by positive virus tests in this abbreviated season.
Manager Scott Servais said on a video call following Monday’s win in Anaheim the Mariners would take a full day off Tuesday and hold an afternoon workout Wednesday. With Thursday’s game now also postponed, the Mariners will likely continue workouts at T-Mobile Park that day with the Rangers scheduled to arrive for a four-game series Friday.
