Marysville apartment fire displaces 9

MARYSVILLE — Nine people were displaced after a Wednesday morning fire heavily damaged an apartment building in Marysville, authorities said.

The fire in the building off 67th Avenue NE broke out on the deck of a second floor unit around 4:30 a.m., according to the Marysville Fire District. It spread to the interior and attic of the unit. Despite smoke alarms in the apartment not sounding, five people inside the apartment made it out safely.

Crews reportedly stopped the fire from spreading through the rest of the building. It was under control in about 20 minutes.

In total, the fire displaced nine residents, including four from the unit below, fire officials said. The Red Cross was assisting them.

Investigators believe the fire was accidental, but the cause remained under investigation Wednesday. Damage was estimated at $100,000.

In a press release, Marysville Fire District Marshal Tom Maloney implored residents to test their smoke alarms and change the batteries every year.

“Smoke alarms can only save your life if they are working,” Maloney said. “Smoke alarms more than 10 years old may not work properly in a fire, even if they sound when tested. Check the manufacturer’s date on your alarms and if it’s more than 10 years old, replace the entire alarm immediately.”
