The week of April 30 through May 6 is National Small Business Week. To commemorate this week, here is a list of some small local businesses you can support in Snohomish and Island Counties.

Malicious Women Co., founded in 2017 by Lacie Marsh-Carroll, produces soy-based scented candles with custom fragrances and labeled with witticisms, both profane and relatable. The colorful language touches on topics such as parenthood, cancer, weddings, military, and recovery.

The Wool Wagon is a mobile boutique traveling around Island County Farmers Markets. Self-described “professional yarn temptress” Willow Mietus, hand dyes yarn and sells it under the name Willow on the Water. Most of Mietus’ yarn is $30 for a skein, a loosely coiled length of yarn. The vast majority is made from extra fine Merino sheep white wool because “it’s ridiculously soft and squishy,” but Mietus has dyed yarn made of wool from goats, yaks and camels.

The spirit of handcrafted, locally made items and books flourishes at Artisans PNW at 1800 Hewitt Ave., as well as Artisans Books and Coffee at 1802 Hewitt Ave. in Everett. They offer jewelry, candles, soap, ornaments, cards, and carved wooden objects from over 100 Pacific Northwest artisans, artists, and small-batch manufacturers.

Cassandra’s Closet, located in downtown Everett, sells both new and used clothing for men and women. Cassandra Bell, the owner, buys liquidation pallets of new clothing and sources stylish used apparel from second-hand stores.

Petrikor, a home and garden store, is a labor of love for two local entrepreneurs. The store launched as an online-only business during the pandemic and it has now opened its brick and mortar location on Rucker Ave.

The Grape & Grain store offers wine and beer from “our backyard” — Washington, Oregon and California. In addition to alcoholic beverages, the store also carries non-alcoholic beer, kombucha, and sodas along with wine glasses and accessories.

Three Bull Brewing’s new taproom in downtown Snohomish goes well with the owners’ hunting and outdoorsy lifestyle. There’s pinball in the backroom, an adjoining vinyl record store jamming indie music, open mic night with an eclectic group of artists, and, of course, more than a dozen taps of really good craft beer.

At Alida’s Bakery, one of their most popular offerings is Manakish, or “Middle Eastern pizza.” This is a popular breakfast item made of baked dough topped with herbs, vegetables, cheese or meat. In February 2023, all profits from the sale of Manakish was donated to help earthquake victims in Syria and Turkey.

In November 2021, Harrison opened MyMyToyStore at 1806 Hewitt Ave. The shelves are stocked with Funko Pops, Super Heroes, Marvel Legend and DC Comics action figures, Nerf balls and retro games. “It’s a Black-owned company that celebrates the imagination, wonder and fun in pop culture,” Harrison said.

Lisa Laidlaw, owner of House Balthazar, experiments with new flavors of French macarons. Some of her most popular picks include salted caramel, chocolate mint, and pistachio rose. She also tries to craft cookies that replicate the tastes of different dishes, like sun-dried tomato with bacon jam and an everything bagel with candied jalapeños.
