What: Carex elata aurea is a wonderful clump-forming, grass-like sedge with bright golden-yellow and green-margined foliage. Better known as Bowle’s golden sedge, this perennial is well behaved in the garden and will not self sow. In early spring, the emerging new growth has lovely golden tips followed by smoky, dark seed heads on thin, bright-green stems.
Where: This glowing golden sedge thrives in light or open shade to full sun; the more sun, the brighter the color. Shady situations will give a vibrant lime to chartreuse appearance. It will grow best in a rich moist soil, but will tolerate wet locations.
Size: Reaches 3 feet high by 3 feet wide in 10 years.
Care: Regular watering will keep the foliage looking its best through the growing season. Cut to the ground in late autumn once the foliage looks tattered.
