SOFTBALL

Non-League

Archbishop Murphy 2, Cascade Christian 0

EVERETT — When junior Carly Madhavan was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning, it was the first time the Wildcats got a leadoff batter on base all game. With the score tied 0-0 in a quick-moving pitcher’s duel, Archbishop Murphy would take any break it could get.

Senior Markella Vick stepped up next and quickly went down 0-2 in the count with two big swings.

“I didn’t know what was going to happen,” Archbishop Murphy coach Megan Dedrick said. “(Vick) didn’t want to strike out. She was really focused on making contact.”

On the third pitch, she did. Finally timing out her swing, Vick hit a walk-off home run to lift the Wildcats (6-2) over the Cougars (1-3).

Junior Saylah Lopez allowed three hits in the complete-game shutout — her first start of the season for Archbishop Murphy — forcing groundouts while the defense behind her made plays. The Wildcats have won four of their past five games, but the other three wins had double-digit scoring margins in which the Wildcats put a total of 48 runs across the plate. This time, Archbishop Murphy got a taste of grinding out a close win in the late innings.

“It’s not over until it’s over,” Dedrick said. “We have to keep fighting in the box no matter what.”

Wesco South 3A/2A

Shorewood 10, Shorecrest 5

SHORELINE — Juniors Lillian Perreault (3-for-4) and Rose Gallagher (2-for-4) each smacked home runs to power the Stormrays (7-4 overall, 2-1 league) to victory. Juniors Emma Kellum and Maddie Schilperoort as well as sophomore Charlotte Copacino each had two hits, including at least one extra-base hit, for Shorewood. The Stormrays pushed to a 7-0 lead through four innings before Shorecrest cut it as close as 8-5 with four runs in the top of the sixth.

Freshman Ruari Hanrahan (2-for-4), sophomore Natalie Hernandez (2-for-3) and junior Lyla Ann Taing (2-for-3) led the offense for the Scots.

BOTHELL — Junior Josh Bouley went 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, two runs and two stolen bases to help lead the Vikings (7-3) past the Cougars (8-5). Edmonds-Woodway 10, Monroe 1

EDMONDS — In his first start since breaking his wrist in the Boys 3A Basketball State Championship a month ago, junior William Alseth earned the win for the Warriors (7-4). Alseth struck out three and walked two across three shutout innings, allowing just one hit. Junior Aksel Forseth (2-for-2) led the offense with three RBI, and also struck out one batter in a single inning of relief. Six other Warriors drove in a run, with all the scoring coming in the second, third and fourth innings.
