EVERETT — Students at Mukilteo School District began collecting food on Wednesday as part of a district-wide food drive to support classmates in need, the district announced in a press release Tuesday.

The student-led effort will help collect food to fill pantries at Mariner, Kamiak and ACES Big Picture high schools, as well as the Mukilteo School District’s Family Engagement Center in Everett, the release read.

“Hundreds of students benefit from these donations each week,” wrote Mary Natalie Shattleroe, a student at Kamiak High School, in the press release. “When our pantry shelves run low there is less for our friends and peers. We see lots of donations around the holidays, but students need food to fuel their success all year and that is why we are working to raise awareness and donations this spring.”

Students will collect food from April 1 to April 30 at two Sound Credit Union locations, at 9901 Harbour Place in Mukilteo and at 33 SE Everett Mall Way. Students will also collect food on May 8 and 9 at the Mukilteo QFC, located at 111700 Mukilteo Speedway. Donations can also be brought to the district’s main offices, located at 9401 Sharon Dr. in Everett.

Students are looking to collect nonperishable food, including shelf-stable milk, canned meals, snacks, pantry staples like peanut butter, rice and cereal, along with fruit cups. Toiletries and bath essentials can also be donated.
