EVERETT — An Everett man was arrested on suspicion of arson after he allegedly set a fire inside his apartment, forcing more than a dozen residents out of their homes.

Police and firefighters responded around 5:45 p.m. on Monday to reports of a fire and a disturbance in the 3300 block of Lombard Avenue, according to a social media post from the Everett Police Department.

Officers said a 43-year-old man had reportedly started a fire and was throwing things from a fourth-floor window at Andy’s Place, Compass Health’s 82-unit supportive housing apartment complex, according to court documents.

The man allegedly threw items at firefighters, preventing them from responding to the fire, records said.

Before officers arrested the suspect, he reportedly yelled at police while swinging a hammer and threatening that someone was going to end up dead, according to court documents.

The man was booked into the Snohomish County Jail on suspicion of two felony charges, including first-degree arson and first-degree malicious mischief, jail records said.

Police reported signs of a fire that started in the bathroom, but was stopped by the apartment’s sprinkler system, records said.

As the response from firefighters was delayed, water flooded several floors and units of the building, according to court documents.

Several residents were displaced by the water damage, police said.

The American Red Cross opened a shelter at the Carl Gipson Center to help as many as 18 residents who were left without a place to stay on Monday night, according to a release for the agency. A spokesperson said all of those people had found a place to stay as of Tuesday.
