Jam: Celebrate African American culture

The Snohomish County Black Heritage Committee presents the annual Nubian Jam Community Festival from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at Forest Park, 802 Mukilteo Blvd. in Everett.

The festival is an opportunity for the residents of Snohomish County to share in the richness and pride of the African American heritage and culture. There will be vendors selling food, wares and distributing information about services available in the county. There will be entertainment, and games for the kids.

And it’s all free.

Peruse: Quilts on Beach

The Cama Beach Quilters have been making quilts for Cama Beach State Park cabins since 2002, and some of the more than 300 unique quilts will be on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The open-air display will have the quilts hanging from the cabins and other buildings at the historic property.

In addition, most of this year’s 50 new quilts will be available for sale, as well as some “last call” quilts that have been used in the cabins over the years. Other handmade items will be for sale. A “Labyrinth” quilt will be raffled off.

See flower pounding, a bed-turning of antique quilts, quilt block sewing and more.

The show is free but a Discover Pass is needed for parking. Cama Beach State Park is at 1880 S West Camano Drive, Camano Island.

Venture: Whidbey Fair is Aug. 4-7

“Stirrup Some Fun” at the Whidbey Island Fair in Langley, which runs from 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 4, 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Aug. 5-6, and 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 7 at 819 Camano Ave. A parade is at 10 a.m. Aug. 6.

There will be 4-H activities, art displays, live music, bubbles, “crazy eights” pony driving, carnival rides and more. Admission is $5 to $8 daily, and free for ages 5 and younger.

Foster: Help a cat or dog in need

The Everett Animal Shelter’s next foster training is to be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 3 at the shelter, 333 Smith Island Road. Foster homes are needed for adult cats, kittens and puppies.

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, pass a background check, be able to get started right away, be able to separate foster pets from household pets, bring animals in for weight checks and vaccinations and more.

Comfort: Hospice volunteers needed

Hospice of the Northwest seeks volunteer companions for hospice patients in Snohomish County.

Volunteers read aloud, listen to stories, play cards, watch movies, share hobbies, do puzzles and record memories. They may also help with household tasks. Visits average about one to two hours per week at a mutually convenient time, while respite visits may last up to four hours.

Prospective volunteers must complete an orientation, held over three Fridays, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 23, Sept. 30 and Oct. 7 at 227 Freeway Drive, Suite A, Mount Vernon. Training is offered twice per year and fills quickly. Background and health checks are required ahead of time. Early registration is encouraged.
