Could be worse; could be breaking rocks: With seasonal workers staying away from fields and orchards in the state, many of them in the country illegally and fearing deportation, Gov. Chris Gregoire has authorized the use of 105 state inmates to be sent to pick apples in Eastern Washington for $8.67 an hour.
Because of the convict pickers, consumers are advised to check all apples for metal files and handcuff keys.
