The Boeing Co. has agreed to ease some vacation and overtime policies on per-case basis for its engineers who are working on the company’s delayed jet programs, the 787 and 747-8.
The engineers union, SPEEA, had asked Boeing in October to
SPEEA wanted Boeing extend an overtime payment premium of base pay plus $15 per hour for time worked above 144 hours per quarter. That premium had been negotiated by SPEEA in its last contract.
The union also asked Boeing to continue to allow engineers to be paid in lieu of time off for accrued vacation that exceeds the maximum amount Boeing allows workers to carry over from year to year.
In a message to managers today, Julie-Ellen Acosta, Boeing’s vice president of human resources for commercial airplanes, notified managers that both requests were temporarily granted for engineers on demanding programs like the 787 and 747-8 on a per-case basis.
“While being mindful of our obligations to customers to deliver airplanes, particularly in our 787 and 747-8 development programs, we must all be aware of the toll excessive overtime takes on employees and their desire for a positive work-life balance,” Acosta wrote. “It is with this balance in mind that deviations will be granted in specific cases.”
