TALKING POINTS
A big night for Jordon Cooke turned out to be a rough night for the Tips.
Cooke, a 17-year-old making his first career WHL start, played like an overager in goal for Kelowna. He made several highlight-reel saves to prevent the Rockets from being blown out.
And then the Tips coughed up a three-goal lead in the third. Everett led 3-0 after two and was in complete control of the game. The Rockets came out hard in the third and the Tips didn’t respond well. Kelowna received some favorable bounces for its goals, but the Rockets also earned those bounces with their hard work.
This is a troubling trend for the Tips. Everett led 3-2 going into the third period of Wednesday’s game against Portland, but was outscored 3-0 in the third period to fall 5-3. So this is the second straight game the Tips had something of a third-period collapse.
Kelowna’s third-period rally relegated Tyler Maxwell’s historic feat to footnote status. Maxwell scored two short-handed goals, giving him goals in each of Everett’s six games this season. The six-game goal-scoring streak matches the franchise record, set by Shane Harper and Byron Froese last season.
TURNING POINT
Three minutes into the third period Cooke made an unbelievable sprawling save to deny Parker Stanfield after it looked like Stanfield had deked his way around the goalie. Less than two minutes later Mitchell Callahan scored on the power play to begin Kelowna’s road back.
HIT OF THE DAY
Not a whole lot of note tonight. Late in the second period Kelowna’s Cody Chikie stickhandled himself straight into Landon Ferraro and got knocked on his behind.
THREE STARS
First star: Cooke. 35 saves and a heck of a way to earn his first WHL victory.
Second star: Maxwell. His two goals give him eight this season, tying for the league lead.
Third star: Callahan. Two goals and one assist, took full advantage of the bounces.
The Herald’s honorable mention: Jari Erricson, Everett. Had an excellent game for a fourth liner who received a limited number of shifts.
