MILL CREEK — Students are being invited to submit their artwork to be displayed at the new Swedish/Mill Creek medical building in south Everett, which is scheduled to open in February.
The three-story, $30 million medical building, operated by Swedish Health Services, is being built near the intersection of I-5 and 128th Street SE. It will have a satellite emergency room, on-site laboratory services, and primary and specialty medical care services.
Swedish is inviting students between the ages of 5 and 18 to submit art work to be displayed in the building.
“Children have a particular gift for speaking from the heart,” said Janette Turner, a member of Swedish’s art committee. “We want to bring that to the patients… and their families.”
Themes that the judges will look for in selecting the artwork include nature, nurture and community, she said.
Art committee members are art professionals, doctors, staff, former patients and community members, Turner said.
Works selected to be on display will be professionally printed and framed. “It is quite a process, but we want the pieces to be enjoyed for a long time,” she said.
The committee has not yet decided how many pieces of student art will be displayed in the 86,770-square-foot building.
“So many people may never get to an art museum but they can be comforted by the artwork made by people in their community,” Turner said.
This is the second time that Swedish has put out a call to students to submit art for one of its buildings.
Its stand-alone emergency room in Issaquah, which open in March 2005, was the first.
Swedish Health Services, a nonprofit health provider, has three hospital campuses, First Hill and Cherry Hill, both in downtown Seattle, and one in Ballard.
On Sept. 1, it took over management of what was formerly Stevens Hospital in Edmonds. It is now called Swedish/Edmonds.
