Miniature artists learn from the masters at Shoreline Arts Camp

Elementary students wanting to hone their art skills converged at Meridian Park School in Shoreline for August Arts Camp last week.

They worked with professional artists in puppet-making, drama, painting, drawing and steel drums, creating artwork and sharing it with others.

“(The camp) really is for kids who are interested in the arts. They get to go deeper,” said Nancy Frey, executive director of the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council, the nonprofit that put on the camp Aug. 10 to 14.

Students spent three hours a day studying a core area of interest and an hour in an elective class.

The camp culminated with a dance and drama performance and a show of student art work Friday, Aug. 14.

Artists included Thaddeus Jurczynski, a giant-puppet artist from Port Townsend; Mona Fairbanks, a professional printmaker; and Marcia Lippert, a professional artist. Jazz trombonist Bob Phillips and drama teacher Rachel Street also taught.

The camp, which runs yearly, is for students who’ve just finished third through sixth grades.

The arts council’s other education programs include a summer jazz camp and an artist-in-residence program at local schools.
