Monroe gives developer more time to submit plan

MONROE — A Seattle developer has until June 30 to submit its plans for a $9.6 million property on North Kelsey Street.

The plans originally were due today, but the council voted 5-1 Tuesday night to give a six-week extension to the developer, Sabey Corp. City staff said the extension is needed to update an environmental study on the 24-acre property.

Councilman Tony Balk voted against the extension after the council held a closed-door discussion on the land deal. He said he would discuss his reasons for his vote after the land negotiations became public.

Most believe the developer will bring a big-box store to the area, such as Wal-Mart, Costco or Target. Since the deal hasn’t closed — the city or the developer can still walk away — many specifics on the developer’s plans haven’t been revealed.
