GOLD BAR — Fire investigators were trying to determine what caused a fire at an abandoned house early Monday.

The vacant house in the 800 block of Orchard Avenue was boarded. Fire crews were summoned just before 5 a.m., after an explosion woke up a neighbor across the street, Snohomish County Fire District 26 Chief Eric Andrews said.

The home was engulfed in flames, he said. About 18 firefighters were called to knock down the fire.

The fire most likely started in the back of the house, from the outside, Andrews said. Investigators on Tuesday were still working to determine what caused it.
