Unattended candle blamed for Marysville house fire

MARYSVILLE — The snap and pop of fireworks alerted neighbors to a house fire Wednesday morning in Marysville that caused about $150,000 damage.

Fire investigators believe an unattended candle sparked the blaze about 6:40 a.m. on Alder Avenue between Fifth and Sixth streets, Marysville Fire District spokeswoman Kristen Thorstenson said. The flames ignited fireworks stored in the home.

Nearly two dozen firefighters quickly brought the fire under control. No one was hurt but a cat was missing. The owner believes the cat ran off, Thorstenson said.

One person was displaced by the blaze and plans to stay with friends.

“Never leave a candle burning unattended,” she said.

And if people store fireworks, it’s best to keep them in a noncombustible container.
