Martin leads after second round of Snohomish County Am

MARYSVILLE — On Wednesday, Reid Martin will begin his quest for a second straight class 4A state championship. This weekend, however, the Kamiak senior has more immediate goals on his mind than defending that title.

“I told my swing coach on Thursday that I’m going to win the County Amateur,” said Martin, who calls Harbour Pointe Golf Club home. “It’s such a well-known tournament. People around here always remember who won and who played well. I want to win.”

And heading into the final round of the 79th Snohomish County Amateur, Martin is in position to accomplish that goal. Martin shot a 4-under 66 in Sunday’s second round, which was held at Cedarcrest Golf Course, and is now five under for the tournament. He has a one-shot lead over Stephen Lee a 1994 graduate of Mariner High whose home course is Everett Golf and Country Club, the site of today’s final round.

Lee, who was even after the first round, matched Martin for the day’s low round by making five birdies and one bogey. Martin had a short birdie put on the par-5 18th, but it swirled around almost the entire cup before lipping out. Martin finished with birdies on 17 and 18 to take the lead.

“I made the puts that I was supposed to make and my misses were in appropriate places,” Lee said. “You can spray the ball out here as long as you know how to spray it.”

Lee and Martin will be joined in the final foursome today by Kris Jackson, who is three shots off the lead after a round of 2-under 68, and Brian Barhanovich, who is five strokes back. Barhanovich had a one-shot lead over Martin after Saturday’s first round, but was two over par Sunday to move back to even par for the tournament.

Lee, an All-West-Coast Conference golfer at Santa Clara, followed his father’s career path by becoming a dentist. He hopes to now follow his father’s footsteps as a winner of the County Am. Bob Lee, who was on hand as a spectator, won the tournament in 1969 and 1972.

“It would be fun to see it back in the family for a year,” the elder Lee said.

Trailing the leading four golfers is a group of five players at two-over par, including the father-son duo of Jeff and Mark Strickland, who will play together in the second-to-last foursome.

Alex Stamey, who is shooting for his fifth County Am and third in a row — both of which would match tournament records — is tied for 13th, nine strokes behind Martin, and admitted after his round that another win is likely out of reach.

“There’s probably too many guys in front of me,” he said. “I’d have to probably shoot 66 or so and then get a whole lot of help in front of me. It’s disappointing, there were some big things I could do this year with records to tie, and I’m probably not going to get it done.”

Reid Martin lines up a putt during the second round of the Snohomish County Am on Sunday. Martin holds a one-shot lead going in to today’s final round at Everett Golf and Country Club.
