Arlington: The Bard plays in the park
The city’s annual Shakespeare in the Park performances begin Saturday.
Last Leaf Productions of Monroe plans to present “The Merry Wives of Windsor” at 6 p.m. in Terrace Park, 809 E. Fifth Ave.
“The Taming of the Shrew” is set to play at 6 p.m. July 25, also at the park.
The city’s recreation department and the Friends of the Arlington Library are funding the free performances. Those who attend are encouraged to bring a blanket.

City department heads to take furlough
Heads of city departments will take unpaid furlough days during the remainder of the year.
The Arlington City Council recently amended the employment contracts of department directors to include four unpaid holidays and eight unpaid furlough days — the same schedule for city staff members.
With budget constraints caused by a 19 percent dip sales tax revenue, employees are taking the unpaid time off in order to keep staffing at current levels. Police and fire unions also are expected to agree to help out, too, city administrator Allen Johnson said.
Camano Island: Gain knowledge of shellfish
Members of the Camano Island Beach Watchers plan to share their strategies for successful shellfish harvesting, along with their shellfish recipes.
Bill Griffith, Duane Hoekstra and Tom Perry are scheduled to give their presentation at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Camano Multipurpose Center, 141 N. East Camano Drive.

Marysville: City may increase garbage rates
The city of Marysville proposes a rate increase for garbage pickup effective July 1.
A hearing on the plan is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at City Hall, 1049 State Ave.
The fee for two months of weekly residential service with a 36-gallon can would increase from $36.20 to $39.46. For commercial rates, pickup for a 1-yard container would increase from $163 to $177.68.
City officials say they need to offset higher costs charged by Snohomish County at its garbage transfer stations.
