EVERETT — This Friday and Saturday, expect to see extra law enforcement on the road.
The “Night of 1,000 Stars” is a statewide safety emphasis patrol to target impaired drivers and people who break other traffic laws by speeding and reckless driving.
The “Night of 1,000 Stars” has been an annual law enforcement program for the last 18 years. In 2007 there were 201 drivers arrested for driving under the influence; 22 in Snohomish County.
The leading cause of motor vehicle deaths is impaired driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, according to state officials.
“We are very fortunate in Snohomish County that our law enforcement agencies make traffic safety a high priority every day, but especially during the winter holidays,” said Tracy McMillan. “Extra law enforcement officers will be out looking for impaired drivers. If you are going to be out celebrating, arrange for a taxi or a designated driver.”
The “Night of 1,000 Stars” is symbolic of the badges worn by the estimated 1,000 officer who will be on duty Friday and Saturday throughout Washington State.
