Miller Road near Stanwood won’t reopen to vehicles

Nancy Ross of Stanwood writes: “I am wondering about the Miller Road In Stanwood. It has been closed for years, but I have noticed the last few times I have driven by there that they are doing some work on it. Does this mean it will reopen sometime soon? That would be wonderful!”

Unfortunately, nothing has changed since we last discussed Miller Road in Street Smarts back in 2013.

Owen Carter, deputy director of Snohomish County Public Works, responds: “As Ms. Ross stated, Snohomish County is performing construction in the Miller Road vicinity. However, this work is to stabilize Pioneer Highway from sliding at this location through a technique called spiral soil nailing. This process requires a contractor to drive long steel rods (nails) through the top loose material and into the underlying hard material to stabilize Pioneer Highway.

“We are using the Miller Road roadway surface as a staging area to drive the spiral nails from. Once this work is completed, plans are to re-open Miller Road this summer for pedestrian and bicyclist use only.

“As was stated in the July 1, 2013 Street Smart column, Miller Road has been closed since it was damaged in March 2011. The road had a low volume of vehicles using it and at this time Snohomish County does not have funds to reconstruct it.”

A project website about the embankment repair work has been updated to reflect the latest information.
