50 years ago (1958)

Walnut Street, partially closed during recent weeks by construction, would be closed to all through traffic and parking for the next 30 days from Butler Street to 16th Street. The announcement was made by Everett traffic Capt. John Olson.

Darlene Vasey, who last week set a new National AAU swim mark in the 100-yard backstroke for girls 14 and under, was to compete in faster company today as a participant in the Inland AAU Swim Meet at Fairchild Air Force Base west of Spokane.

25 years ago (1983)

Pilchuck Business and Professional Women elected and installed Helen Beeston as their president for the 1983-84 club year. Beeston, a 14-year member and past president, was one of the organizers of the Pilchuck BPW club, which was beginning its fourth year. Other elected officers were Fran Sevela, Linda Woodall, Ina Novak and Fran Cook. Mary Riordan was immediate past president.

Rick Olson, a sophomore at Lake Stevens High School, was selected winner of an art competition sponsored by 2nd District U.S. Rep. Al Swift, a Democrat. His winning entry, an untitled pen-and-ink drawing, would be displayed in the U.S. Capitol. He was the son of Bill and Jerri Olson.
