Helping the world: Wants to make a career of raising awareness of international causes such as malaria and AIDS. Is working on a presentation on malaria that she’d like to give to her school.
College classes: Taking Advanced Placement government and calculus this semester.
On the field: Co-captain of Lynnwood’s volleyball and softball teams. “I’ve always been very competitive and sports have always been something that’s part of my life.”
Go Bruins: Recently accepted to University of California, Los Angeles. Still waiting to hear back from other schools. Wants to study public relations or international relations.
Moving North: Moved to LynnÂwood from Los Angeles in late 2002. Lives with aunt, uncle and cousins.
Summer job: Spent five weeks as an unpaid intern at a tutoring center in the Mission District of San Francisco.
Global perspective: “In our country, we’re so privileged, a lot of youth don’t realize how good they have it.”
Loves helping: Volunteers as a volleyball camp counselor, as one of the upper-class students who help freshman fit into high school, and helps with annual food drive.
Scholarship: Received a competitive $10,000 scholarship from Nordstrom. Attended a scholarship brunch in Seattle, where she received a MacBook laptop.
Paint passion: Spends free time painting colorful, abstract pictures. Admires Henri Matisse, Vincent van Gogh, Salvador Dali and Diego Rivera.
Favorite movie: “Crash,” a 2004 drama about how several seemingly-unconnected lives intertwine. Helped her see how everything you do affects someone else.
Looking up: Role model is economist Jeffrey Sachs. “He’s just brilliant. I think it’s really cool that someone who has so much power can see the need in other places.”
Favorite bites: Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese food.
