Super kid

Budding scientist: Hopes to major in environmental chemistry or environmental toxicology at Western Washington University. Would like to become a researcher.

Dancing with planets: Interest in science started early in life with collecting bugs and rocks. At a dance recital when she was about 6, “I was a solar system, not a Barbie.”

More on science: Has taken seven science classes since her freshman year, including three as a sophomore. Recently found “Napoleon’s Buttons: How 17 Molecules Changed History” by Penny LeCouteur to be a good read. “The average Joe probably wouldn’t want to pick it up and read it.”

Favorite fiction: Books by Barbara Kingsolver, such as “The Poisonwood Bible” and “The Bean Trees.”

Pushing hard: Isn’t slacking off her senior year. Schedule includes college-level Advanced Placement courses in biology, calculus and English, as well as government, Spanish and wind ensemble.

On the road: Is in Indianapolis, Ind., where she is a state delegate this week for a national Future Farmers of America conference. Has attended two other national conventions and has played in the national FFA band. Has played clarinet in her school’s performance and marching bands.

Little friends: Has two miniature donkeys, Sophie and Electra, who are just under 3 feet tall at the shoulder.

Equine friends: Also has horses at home, including Fyre, a 19-year-old Arab, who doesn’t show his age. “If you asked him, he would say he is 4.”

Green thumb: Has her own business growing plants in a greenhouse at home and making hanging baskets. “My whole house is full of plants.”

Fond memories: Summer trips with family and grandparents to San Juan Islands. Likes watching the whales, the slower pace and just being with family. “It’s so relaxing and it’s so pretty up there and the weather is amazing because it’s sunny and it’s not too hot.”
