GOOD WORKS

As gas prices again begin to edge up, one local church is going out of its way to make the trip to the pump easier.
Today, Bible Baptist Church of Everett is offering a discount of 25 cents per gallon, starting at 1 p.m., until 4,000 gallons have been pumped at Chamdor’s 76 Station, 9640 Evergreen Way.
“We want to let the community know that we’re not about taking things but about giving things,” said senior pastor Erik Sanders.
Sanders, who has been a pastor at Bible Baptist Church since 2001, hopes this will knock down the perceptions that some people might have of church.
“People have a view of church in general, that churches always want something. We want to give back to the people, invite them to our church and show them what Bible Baptist Church is all about,” Sanders said. “We’re stepping off the church property and getting into the community.”
The church is putting roughly $2,000 into the pumps to drop the per-gallon cost by a quarter.
Sanders heard of the idea from a church in Kansas that had done the same kind of outreach. If this event proves successful, he would like to repeat it on an annual basis or even more than once a year.
On Sunday, the Bible Baptist Church will also host an open house with a barbecue following their 11 a.m. service.
“We offer a friendly and old-fashioned church with over 600 members. Ministries are geared to toddlers and senior citizens and everyone in between. We show people how to find the only satisfaction in life — through Jesus. We do this in a loving and nonjudgmental way,” Sanders said.
