Everett: Raising the bar for Broadway

Everett’s Planning Commission is holding a workshop at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Everett Station’s Weyerhaeuser Room to discuss sweeping changes aimed at reshaping development standards for Broadway.

Planning staff and consultants are scheduled to present basic concepts of proposed new design standards and regulations including: improving street landscaping, phasing out car sales lots, allowing increased building heights and prohibiting freestanding signs taller than 8 feet.

Residents and property owners are encouraged to attend and participate in the workshop, which will feature discussions of alternatives, policies and recommendations for the redevelopment of the Broadway corridor.

The proposed Broadway Mixed Use Zone may be viewed on the city of Everett’s Planning Department Web site at www.everettwa.org or at the Planning Department, 2930 Wetmore Ave., Suite 8A.

Everett: Community chat at college

Everett Community College plans a drop-in talk session called Conversation Cafe from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Park Central, in the main floor of the Parks Building, 2000 Tower St.

The informal program, on the first and third Thursday of every month, is now entering its second year. This year’s series kicks off this year with the topic: “What does it mean to you to be human?”

Laura Hedges, women’s services manager with the college, said everyone is invited to the conversation, not just students and faculty.

The Conversation Cafe series is part of a nationwide effort to bring communities together in public places for meaningful and civil conversations, Hedges said.

“The benefit is restoring the lost art of conversation and debate on today’s topics,” Hedges said.

Lake Stevens: School will be dedicated

The public is invited to attend the dedication ceremony and open house for Cavelero Mid High at 5 p.m. Monday at the school, 8220 24th St. SE.

Cavelero Mid High serves the district’s eighth- and ninth-grade students. It opened with 1,200 students on Sept. 5. The school was built with a $65.5 million bond approved by voters in 2005.

The two-story, 220,000 square-foot building is the district’s largest school. As student population grows in the future, the school is expected to become the district’s second high school, serving students in ninth through 12th grades.

The dedication is expected to include the presentation of colors by Lake Stevens Cub and Boy Scouts, musical performances by Cavelero Mid High Band, and comments by district officials and others. Refreshments and tours will follow the ceremony. Janae “JJ” Schultz will sing the national anthem.
