MALTBY – A break-in turned brawl ended when the alleged burglar was clubbed with a baseball bat and tied up.
The suspect, who initially was booked into Snohomish County Jail for attempted murder, was being held Monday for investigation of burglary and felony harassment. A judge set bail at $50,000.
Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies raced to a house in the Paradise Lake area southeast of Maltby early Sunday morning for a report of an assault.
A woman who lives at the home told police she knows the suspect, according to a police affidavit filed in Everett District Court.
She said their children play on the same soccer team and the man asked her out on a date. She told the deputy she declined to date the man and he started following her and leaving threatening messages.
On Sunday the man, 42, reportedly hitchhiked to the woman’s house and knocked on her front door. The woman opened the door and quickly shut it. Fearful of the man, she and a friend who was in the home called a neighbor, according to court records.
The suspect allegedly kicked in the door and grabbed the woman’s friend by the throat and threatened to kill him, the deputy wrote. At the time, the suspect had a knife in his boot.
The suspect allegedly attempted to bite the man’s ear. The woman’s neighbor intervened in the fight and told police that the suspect bit his arm, drawing blood.
The woman reported that the suspect hit her in the head during the brawl, according to court documents.
The woman’s friend eventually grabbed a metal baseball bat and clobbered the suspect in the head and shoulder, court records said. The woman’s friend and her neighbor used wire and a belt to restrain the suspect until police arrived.
The deputy reported hearing threatening phone messages allegedly left by the suspect for the woman, according to court records.
The suspect told police he hitchhiked to the woman’s house to get her out of a “drug house,” the deputy wrote.
The suspect was evaluated for injuries and booked into jail.
