Helping hand: Volunteers on weekends during the school year and four days a week during the summer with EquiFriends, helping children with special needs ride horses. “It’s the kind of place when you go, you don’t want to leave. You get attached to your riders.”
The next step: Felt there was more she could do, so she sent a video about EquiFriends to ABC’s “Extreme Home Makeover” producers to see about getting improvements to the facility. She also recommended work on the home of an EquiFriends staff member. Employees from the show, which gets thousands of requests, toured the grounds last week.
Why she did it: “It’s very deserving. I don’t want attention. I just like to help out and give back in what I can.”
New kid: Transferred to Lakewood this year after her family moved north from the Marysville School District. Spent five years in Utah and has moved several times over the years. Advice to other frequent movers: “Be yourself.”
Likes a challenge: Is taking trigonometry and college-level Spanish and biology classes along with English, U.S. history and a teaching assistant class in the counselors’ office.
Goal: To become a veterinarian working with large animals, especially horses. How about a camel? “I would try.”
Good times: Likes to go on tour with her dad’s gospel band, The Dreyer Brothers.
Favorite music Jazz and Christian songs. Particularly likes Louie Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, who she calls “the king and queen of jazz.”
Favorite books: Nancy Drew.
Early riser: Alarm goes off at 4:30 a.m. and she keeps it out of arm’s length to make sure she’ll get up. “I’m a procrastinator in the morning. Once I’m up, I like to get the coffee started for my parents.”
Pet peeve: “I hate swearing. I’m totally offended by it.”
Pets: A miniature dachshund puppy named Walter “who has a lot of energy,” and two cats, including one she wanted to name Sassafras but is now known as Momma Cat.
Good match: Is on the junior varsity tennis team and is enjoying it. “This is my first year playing a school sport. It’s fun.”
