The Motely Fool http://www.fool.com/News/mft/2005/mft05111622.htm suggests that Boeing’s move to launch the 747-8 has more to do with limiting A380 sales than making big bucks for Boeing.
Key Quote: “Boeing’s new 747-8 probably won’t be very profitable for the company, but that’s not the point. The idea is to weaken Airbus by limiting or even eliminating profits from the A380, and thus reduce Airbus’ capacity to develop new planes.”
Analysts told Bloomberg News http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000103&sid=a0Ga5TflC9a0&refer=us much the same thing.
Key Quote: “‘If the investment for Boeing is an incremental cost in comparison to what Airbus spent on the A380, then it’s worth the risk-reward for them,’ said Will Mackie, an analyst at Mainfirst Bank AG in London. ‘With the 747 Advanced, they can maintain their position in the marketplace, disrupt the competitive balance with Airbus, and keep a full product lineup.’”
