Panasonic wins 787 system bid

Bothell-based Panasonic Avionics Corp. has been named one of the recommended suppliers of in-flight entertainment systems for the Boeing Co.’s new 787 jet.

The company, formerly known as Matsushita Avionics Systems, will offer a wireless version of its X-Series in-flight system.

Panasonic is the second in-flight entertainment supplier named for the 787, a move intended to give airlines choices, Boeing said. Thales of France is the other.

Boeing said it is working with the companies to develop wireless in-flight entertainment systems that will make flying more enjoyable for passengers and more profitable for airlines. Wireless systems weigh less and are quicker to install and replace because there is less wiring involved.

Panasonic Avionics is a subsidiary of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., the makers of Panasonic-brand electronics. The avionics division has its headquarters in Bothell, with about 2,500 employees worldwide.

The company previously was picked as the supplier of the 787’s cabin services system, which includes the public address system used by flight attendants and electronics connected with the emergency evacuation system.
