Super Kid

Toga! Toga! Helped organize Homecoming Week and wore outlandish outfits to show spirit last week, dressing up as a 1980s summer camp counselor and as Cat Woman along with wearing a toga one day and school colors the next. “It’s like Halloween every day.”
Involved in school: Is student body publicity officer this year and has taken on other leadership roles over the years. Remembers feeling inspired when upperclassmen encouraged her to get involved as a freshman. “I just thought I was the coolest person out there because the juniors and seniors asked me for help and encouraged me. I know they probably asked a lot of people, but it still made me feel good.”
Career hopes: Wants to get into Brown University or University of Washington and could study journalism. Would like to work for a magazine that explores pop culture.
Eager to vote: Helped register voters but missed – by five days – the birthday cut-off to register to vote for the upcoming presidential election.
International approach: Has split time between the school’s regular curriculum and international baccalaureate program that emphasizes a global and interdisciplinary approach to learning. The classes opened her eyes to literature by foreign authors and outside perspectives of American history.
Remembering Tom Joad: Says John Steinbeck is one of her favorite authors and “The Grapes of Wrath” is one of her favorite works.
Fond memory: “Care Week” last year as a junior when the school recognized staff and every student in the school with a wall of individualized paper hearts. She remembers walking by and seeing people huddled around looking for their names. “It may sound like a cheesy thing, but people felt good about it. It made people feel important no matter how small it may seem.”
Other activities: Member of the school’s tennis team and “Students for Democracy,” which works to increase awareness and involvement in community and political system.
Advice to others: Get involved in school no matter what your interests are. “I really think high school is more than just the courses. It is really about developing who you are.”
