Everett Silvertips up to No. 6 in CHL poll and mid-week notes

The Everett Silvertips continue to be recognized to for their torrid start to the 2016-17 season. The Tips moved up to No. 6 in the latest Canadian Hockey League rankings Wednesday. Regina is No. 2 while Prince George is fourth.

The Tips practiced Wednesday in anticipation of Thursday’s home game against the Tri-City Americans. Lucas Skrumeda (upper body) participated in the full practice, so I anticipate him returning Thursday. Matt Fonteyne (shoulder) and Brian King (lower body) skated afterward on their own. King was in a non-contact jersey, so he probably won’t be back for a while. Orrin Centazzo did not practice.

Mackenzie Dwyer is still skating with the forwards, where he’s played the last several games, and I spoke to him about that after practice.

“Sometimes guys have to step into different roles and play them to help the team win any way we can,” he said. “Our team learns everything in the dressing room together and in video sessions no matter what. Learning the forward systems is a necessity for everyone, so going from ‘D’ isn’t that much of a difference.”

Dwyer cracked the lineup at forward for several games last year including the January game in which he tore his ACL. He comes from a family of defensemen that includes his father and brothers.

“Its nice to get a little change every now and then, but it’s good to play your own position and fun to play your own position,” Dwyer said. “It’s a new thing, it’s a new challenge. As humans and hockey players, as competitive as we are, we like new challenges so in that way it’s good.”

Rookie forward Brett Kemp and assistant coach Mitch Love remain away with their respective Team Canada squads in preparation for the U-17 World Hockey Challenge.
