MILL CREEK — A group of about 42 students from Henry M. Jackson High School were stranded at Diablo Lake on Friday after a snow slide closed Highway 20 east of Newhalem.
The students left Wednesday for a two-day field trip to the North Cascades Institute’s Environmental Learning Center. All the students were reported safe and warm and they have enough food at the institute, said Leanna Albrecht, a spokeswoman for the Everett School District.
The students’ parents have been notified. Five school staff and two parent volunteers are with the students, Albrecht said.
As a result of the closure, the students are expected to have an “extended learning experience,” at the center, Albrecht said.
The state Department of Transportation plans re-evaluate the condition of the highway Monday.
